It seems the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor really is starting to come into its own. Not as a gaming CPU but rather in all sorts of high usage applications such as Folding and Cryptography. The processor apparently gives performance up to 100 times that of standard PC CPUs, not surprising really when you consider that the Cell was originally destined to be doing the graphics for the PS3 and other GPU based systems seem to be VERY good at this sort of thing too.

Sunny times for the Microsoft Zune? It would seem not.

Looks like Nvidia fumbled the ball on their new 8800 cards, oops. You’d think they had better quality control, to let something as stupid as the wrong resistor value through is shocking.

I was getting ready to order all the bits for my new upgrade, when I decided to do some looking around just to confirm I was getting “the good stuff”. I found some rather surprising stuff.
Currently the Intel Core 2 Duo chips seem to be beating the AMD X2 chips hands down. And the NVIDIA GeForce 7950GX2 seems to have rather a lot of driver issues, that leaves it underperforming by a fair amount.
So I have changed what I am getting by a fair bit, and the first couple of components have been ordered.
- Intel LGA775 Pentium Core 2 Duo E6600 Processor
- Asus P5B Deluxe Motherboard
- ATi Radeon X1950 XT-X Graphics Card
- Crucial 2×1gb matched DDR2 dimms
- Tagen 600w PSU
Update: 12 Oct 2005
It’s all ordered.

Well, it’s only taken nearly two years, but I’m finally getting ready for a new upgrade for the PC. I’ve got it all specced up and ready to be ordered:
- AMD Athlon X2 5000+ (Socket AM2)
- ASUS M2N-E Motherboard
- 2gb of Crucial Balistix RAM (2x Matched 1gb sticks)
- Leadtek Geforce 7950 GX2 (Yes, SLI on a single card! :D)
- A Lovely Tagen 500 Watt PSU to power it all
The whole kit and caboodle is only costing £980 inc. VAT and Delivery, a bargain!

I remember the days when Amstrad PCs were a real contender on the pre-built market. Companies such as BSkyB relied on them for years. Nowadays they seem to do nothing but come up with cheap home electronics such as the doomed Amstrad E-Mailer.
However they’ve really fallen now, with their upcoming “Amsface”. The device is essentially an animated face of a TV character, that quotes “famous” lines of said character. It comes with 20 quotes pre-loaded, as well as the option to have one personally recorded by the actor who plays the character. Woo, with features like that and the low low price of £39 I’m sure the world will be flocking to buy one.
But wait, there’s more! Not only do you get to hear the dulcet tones of some random character no one has ever heard of, there’s also an animated hand that pops out of a little side door pointing a finger as the device says “You’re fired!”, aren’t we lucky!
That said the device IS meant for charity, but quite frankly only Sun readers would want to darken their mantlepiece with such a tacky bit of plastic, and I’m quite sure Amstrad could have spent their R&D budget on far better charity devices, not to mention wasting money on a two bit actor. It doesn’t even serve any purpose. I could let it off if it took phone messages or something, but all it appears to do is sit there looking stupid!
Take a look at the awful device.

Engadget have a post regarding a new Seagate barracuda drive, weighing in at a whopping 750GB! The drive also seems to perform excellently, with speeds only being beaten by Western Digital’s Raptor drives.
Go check it out.
