Entropy is at once both truely awe-inspiring to contemplate and downright depressing. The idea that everything will eventually burn out and leave an endless empty nothingness for ever more is pretty depressing, but the thought that all this energy came from somewhere to begin with is a faint glimmer of hope.
Asimov’s short story “The Last Question“ is well worth taking 5 minutes to stop and read.

I’ve followed the sword of truth series for a few years now and while it sometimes has been a bit slow, or a bit heavy on the anti-communist sentiment, it’s been generally a great read. So I’ve been looking forward to the release of the series’ 10th and penultimate book, Phantom.
The book is, on the whole, just as exciting as some of the early books in the series. However some parts just seem for lack of a better term, too detailed. Now you might think that’s a good thing, but when they start talking about inverse duplex interior aspect analysis patterns on spell forms, you do start to glaze over. Luckily it’s not very often, and the rest of the story is pretty high adrenalin throughout.
Richard seems to be much stronger than in the last book, which may not come as much of a surprise to those who follow the series, as in the last book most other characters thought he was going insane. But more than that, he seems to know much more about what is going on in general, and the characters who usually try and take charge remain firmly in the background this time.
The series is definitely drawing to a grand finalĂ©, with the next book set to wrap everything up nicely. This book definitely feels like the deep breath before the final hurtling end, and quite frankly I couldn’t put it down.
Roll on the next one!
